Growth of Triple Play Services Stimulates Taiwanese DSL Industry
August 10, 2006

According to Market Intelligence Center (MIC), in the first quarter of 2006, total shipment volume of Taiwanese DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) hit 10.8 million units, up 10.9% year-on-year, with shipment value rising 21.6% year-on-year to US$364.2 million. Shipment share of wireless DSL routers and IADs (Integrated Access Device) reached 28.6% and 24.9% respectively. Shipment volume of Taiwanese central-office equipment reached 637,000 ports, thanks to the continuous shipment growth for the Japanese market.

Although penetration rates of DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) subscribers have gradually reached saturation in Western Europe, North America, Japan, and Korea, shipment of high-end DSL products, which incorporate VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and QoS (Quality of Service) management functions, increased along with the promotion of triple play services by operators, boosting ASP (Average Selling Price). Moreover, owing to vigorous promotion of broadband services by telecoms in Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, DSL subscribers in those areas grew, enabling shipment of customer-premise DSL products to increase further.

Influenced by the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directive of the European Union, it is estimated that in the second quarter of 2006 DSL CPE shipment volume will only grow slightly to 10.8 million units, with shipment value reaching about US$387.5 million.
